My Hair Story: Growth

Do you like the photo? I must say getting my boyfriend to craft out my hair in a spreaded formation like that was pretty funny and resulted in some unflattering shots of double chin. But a bit of cropping really can save the day. I wanted to do a post all about my hair journey because I feel I talk a lot about my style and cosmetics but posts covering hair are always fall few and far between. Which is strange because I take so much pride in my hair and probably have just as much hair products as I do makeup.

My hair story really starts when I had the big chop in secondary school - the second in my lifetime at the point but there would be a third later too. It was around when the inverted bob came into fashion (or trended again, these things are always coming back around) and I wanted a change so decided to go for it and have a longer inverted bob that came to about my shoulders at the front and the bottom of my neck at the back. I absolutely loved it at first but I soon realised how restricting it was. Curls made it too short, an up do resulted in tons of short pieces falling down and so I wore it down and straight day after day. That is when I turned to hair extensions. Which was an addiction for years. I would clip them in everyday to fake the long hair I craved whilst I grew my hair underneath.

My hair did grow but not very much and what's more my hair was just getting pretty damaged by this point. Not necessarily by the extensions - which I'm sure didn't help - but I had recently lifted my hair from black to brown with my colour washing up so quickly dying it at home became a monthly past-time. My hairdresser suggested that I get the chop again to start a fresh and get rid of my split ends. I didn't mind as Cheryl Cole had recently gone short and I adored the volumised bob on her so hoped I could recreate such a look on myself. The truth, I couldn't. The chop took years of me and I felt like a little girl. I yearned for long hair so reached for the extensions all over again.

However, just over a year ago I decided to ditch them for good and concentrate on getting my hair in better nick and learning to love the natural hair I had. That meant regularly using heat protection on my hair, trying not to use heat on my hair everyday and putting masks on my hair more frequently. This all certainly helped and I began to see my hair get longer and thicker over time. But the most rapid change wasn't until a couple of months ago. I decided to purchase Bumble & Bumble Tonic Lotion to use as a detangler and to emphasis the performance of volumising products. But the goodness didn't stop there.

This product literally made my hair grow at least 1 and a half - 2 inches in a couple of months and even more it made my hair thicker and in better condition. I put it down to all the natural ingredients packed into this miracle bottle. It has a mix of herbs and vitamins like tea tree oil to replace the natural oils that chemically coloured hair lack. As I have dry hair which it is specially formulated for alongside, coarse, porous and dyed locks, I loved how nourishing this formula feels. It has lemongrass for fullness and moisture balance, flower extract for softness and gloss, vitamin E to protect and nourish and nettle extract to condition and tone. It is also amazing for those with sensitive or flaky scalps as the nutrients lubricate the cuticles and calm irritation thanks to the peppermint and rosemary leaf extract which work as an antiseptic and anti-microbial. It is also these ingredients which contribute to hair growth down to it stimulating circulation to the scalp.

For £16 it may seem like a steep price to pay for a spray but from my experience it is worth every penny and I think I will be repurchasing for a long time to come. Sure you need to still use masks and conditioner (I use a mask at least once a week) but this has taken my whole hair quality up at notch. I just spray it liberally all over damp hair and even sometimes as a refresher when dry. It seems like it will lasts a long time too as I am probably am only a fifth of the way down this chunky 250ml bottle! So, that initial fee seems pretty small now in hindsight.

If you try this lovely product make sure to be strict and use it every time you wash and I'm sure you will have a similar experience to me. To buy you can go straight through the brand website here or at many of your beauty retailers like here. If you have already tried this product I'd love to know your thoughts!

  1. I love reading these kind of posts and I'm so keen on writing on someday. Your hair story was super interesting - and I know what you mean about paying a lot for a product that it's so worth it. I'd rather pay more for a product that it's going to improve my hair quality than paying less for a product that won't do what it claims to do!! :) I shall try that product, I'll see if I can find it in any store in Spain although I don't think so! :-(

  2. I'm currently trying to grow out my natural colour, I've been bleach blonde for years and just before christmas I dyed my hair brown and had a big chop to get rid of all my thick, dry and tangled ends. I've had another cut since but it's starting to grow out again, with dry ends, but my natural brown roots are coming along nicely. I'm in need of another cut to get shut of the ends, but i've been searching for something that will really help get my hair back to it's natural health, this sounds like it might do the trick! I've also developed a sensitive flaky scalp in recent years too, so this literally sounds exactly what I need. Thanks for the heads up, I'll be off to purchase a bottle asap! :)
